How Car Donation Works: From Your Driveway to a Commissary Grant

Most old cars end the same way: sitting in a driveway, costing insurance and registration while they lose value. Car donation is the alternative that turns that dead weight into something that matters. Here's the full path, step by step.

Step 1: You start the donation. You begin online through our Careasy donation link or call 855-500-RIDE. You provide basic vehicle details — year, make, model, condition. That's it. There is no form on this site; the secure donation process happens through CARS (Charitable Adult Rides & Services), the vehicle donation processor. We never collect your VIN, title number, or lien information ourselves.

Step 2: Free tow pickup. A licensed tow operator contacts you to schedule pickup, usually within 24 to 72 hours. Towing is free — in running condition or not, the tow costs you nothing. When the driver arrives, you hand over the signed title and the keys. Make sure your title is lien-free first: if a lender is listed on it, they must sign a release before the donation can proceed.

Step 3: The vehicle is sold. CARS handles the sale — most vehicles go to wholesale auction. Selling expenses (towing, auction fees, title work) are deducted from the sale price. The net proceeds are what moves forward.

Step 4: Net proceeds fund commissary grants. Here's where DonateACar.io is different from every other car donation program. The net proceeds flow to Soul Tribes International Ministries, which directs them into commissary grants — money that lands on the books of incarcerated people so they can buy soap, toothpaste, stamps, and other basic necessities that prison wages can't cover. In several states, incarcerated workers earn pennies per hour or nothing at all; a few dollars on a commissary account is the difference between basic hygiene and doing without.

Step 5: Your paperwork. You receive a donation receipt. Vehicles over $500 receive IRS Form 1098-C from the processor. Consult your tax advisor about your situation — we don't give tax advice, and we don't make promises about deductions.
