Donating a Car in Houston: What Local Donors Should Know

Houston is a car town in a car state — which means it's also a donation town. Between hurricane-flooded vehicles on the Gulf Coast side and worn-out oil-field pickups that migrate east, Houston donors move some of the hardest-used vehicles in the country. And every one of them can fund a commissary grant.

Free tow pickup anywhere in Houston. From the Heights to Clear Lake, Katy to Baytown — pickup is free, running or not. A licensed tow operator schedules with you directly, usually within 24 to 72 hours. Flood-damaged cars that dealers won't touch are some of the most common Houston donations; water damage doesn't disqualify a vehicle.

The Texas title process, Houston edition. Sign the Texas title over to the donation recipient — no notarization required in Texas. Complete Form 130-U (Application for Texas Title and/or Registration). Then file a Vehicle Transfer Notification with TxDMV within 30 days — this is the step that protects you from toll-road bills and red-light tickets after the car leaves your name. Harris County's toll roads (Sam Houston Tollway, Westpark, the Grand Parkway) generate violations fast; file the notification the same week you donate. The tow driver collects your signed title and keys at pickup.

Houston-specific timing. Hurricane season (June through November) floods thousands of Gulf Coast vehicles a year. If your car took on water, don't wait for mold to set in and don't pay for repairs hoping to sell it — flood cars are among the most donated vehicles in Houston precisely because dealers won't touch them. Donate while the title is clean and the car is intact; water damage doesn't disqualify it, but months of sitting will only reduce its value.

Lien check. The vehicle must be lien-free at pickup. If a lender is listed on the title, get the signed release before scheduling — Houston-area lenders can take a week or more to produce release letters, so start early.

Where the money goes. Net proceeds from your vehicle's sale fund commissary grants through Soul Tribes International Ministries — money on the books of incarcerated people for soap, stamps, toothpaste, and basic necessities. Texas holds the largest state prison population in the nation; the need for commissary support here is as big as it gets.

Your paperwork. Donation receipt at pickup; vehicles over $500 receive IRS Form 1098-C from the processor. Consult your tax advisor about your situation.
