How to Transfer Your Title When Donating a Car in Texas

Texas has one of the more donor-friendly title processes in the country, but there's one step Texans skip more than anyone else — and it's the step that protects you. Here's the full process.

Step 1: Sign the Texas title over to the donation recipient. Complete the assignment section on the back of your Texas title: the recipient's name and address, the odometer reading, the sale date. Sign as the seller. No notarization is required for a Texas title transfer — your signature alone does it. Never sign a blank title. Fill in the recipient's information first; a signed blank title is an open invitation to fraud.

Step 2: Complete Form 130-U. This is the Application for Texas Title and/or Registration, which covers the donor signature section. Your tow driver or the processor will guide you on exactly which fields are yours — don't stress about memorizing the form, but do make sure your sections are complete before the driver leaves.

Step 3: File a Vehicle Transfer Notification with TxDMV — within 30 days. This is the step people skip, and it's the one that matters most. Filing the notification (easily done online, or by mail with Form VTR-346) adds a remark to the vehicle record showing the transfer date. From that date forward, the recipient is the presumed owner for tolls, tickets, and other liability. Skip this step and a red-light camera ticket in Dallas three months from now can land in your mailbox.

Step 4: Hand over title and keys at pickup. The licensed tow driver collects your signed title and keys when the truck arrives. Keep a photocopy or phone photo of both sides of the completed title for your records.

Timing tip. Start the lien-release request before you schedule pickup. Texas lenders commonly take a week or more to produce a release letter, and the donation can't proceed until the title is clear. Getting the release first means your pickup happens on your schedule, not the bank's.

Lien check. Your title must be lien-free at pickup. If a lender is listed on the title, they must sign a lien release on the title itself or provide a separate release letter before the donation can proceed. No release, no donation — Texas won't transfer around an active lien.

Your paperwork after. You receive a donation receipt; vehicles over $500 receive IRS Form 1098-C from the processor. Consult your tax advisor about your situation.
